IgniteNet and EDGE FiberNet are finalists in NYC Governors Island Connectivity Challenge

The Trust for Governors Island (TGI) is collaborating with the Mayor’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (MOCTO) to launch the Governors Island Challenge. The goal of the Challenge is to use Governors Island as a greenfield testing ground to define next generation “Smart City” connectivity technologies with the quickest Internet speeds and the lowest possible cost.

EDGE has already established Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan “Gig+” service areas immediately proximal to Governors Island. Extending their multi-Gbps network Edge to Governors Island is not at all challenging for them. EDGE’s “spoke and hub” network relies on long-haul fiber optic connections that feed “hubs” and IgniteNet MetroLinq, 60 GHz millimeter wave point to point and point to multipoint system that serve the “spokes.” The success of deploying MetroLinq products to deliver fiber like internet connectivity at a much lower cost compared to fiber and in a much shorter deployment time frame make IgniteNet products ideal for the Gig+ backbone and last mile connectivity.

“Without the cost-crushing reliability and thruput of IgniteNet’s interference-free 2.5Gbps point-to-point and point-to-multipoint link products, it would have been impossible for EDGE or any other competitor to meet the $100,000 cost ceiling set by TGI to deliver 1,000Mbps carrier-grade services everywhere on Governors Island services may be required now and in the future,” says Ted Flomenhaft, EDGE CEO.

“More and more service providers are taking advantage of 60 GHz mmwave frequency allowing them to increase bandwidth, decrease latency and free up legacy ISM bands for Wi-Fi connectivity. When designing MetroLinq products, product cost was one of the key factors allowing us to challenge today’s competition and build very affordable and easy to use wireless equipment, which would become a great alternative to fiber deployments and take internet connectivity services to next level. Making it to the final round of NYC Governors Island Connectivity Challenge, shows that we are on a good path and many of service providers have started to recognize that”, says Chad Dewey, a VP of Product for IgniteNet.
